SIMACRO Joins DEXPI to Advance Open and Interoperable Digital Twins for the Process Industry

Strengthening Industry Collaboration Around Engineering Data and Digital Twin Standards

As digital transformation initiatives continue to expand across the process industries, the importance of standardized and interoperable engineering data has never been greater. From design and commissioning to operations and optimization, organizations increasingly depend on consistent information exchange to support digital twins, operational intelligence, and advanced analytics.

To help address this challenge, industry organizations such as DEXPI (Data Exchange in the Process Industry) are working to establish common standards for engineering data exchange across the process plant lifecycle. With a current focus on the exchange of piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) data, DEXPI brings together technology providers, engineering companies, asset owners, and industry experts to improve interoperability and enable more connected digital workflows.

SIMACRO is pleased to announce that we have been approved as a member of DEXPI.

Why DEXPI Matters for Digital Twin Development

Digital twins have become a central component of industrial digitalization strategies. However, the effectiveness of any digital twin depends heavily on the quality, consistency, and accessibility of underlying engineering and operational data.

Many organizations continue to face challenges caused by fragmented information systems, inconsistent engineering data structures, and limited interoperability between design, simulation, and operational platforms. These challenges can create barriers to scaling digital twin initiatives and realizing their full operational value.

Open standards play an important role in addressing these challenges by enabling reliable data exchange across systems, disciplines, and lifecycle stages.

As the industry moves toward increasingly connected digital ecosystems, initiatives such as DEXPI provide a critical foundation for ensuring that engineering information remains accessible, reusable, and interoperable.

SIMACRO's Perspective

SIMACRO has been closely engaged in developing and deploying process digital twin solutions for major energy and chemical companies. Through these projects, we have seen firsthand the importance of integrating engineering knowledge, simulation models, and operational data into a unified digital environment.

Our work combines simulation-based digital twins, hybrid modeling approaches, and data-driven process intelligence to help organizations improve visibility, optimize performance, and support better operational decision-making.

We believe this experience aligns strongly with the goals of DEXPI, particularly as the industry continues to pursue more open and interoperable approaches to digital transformation.

Looking Forward to Contributing

Joining DEXPI provides an exciting opportunity for SIMACRO to collaborate with industry leaders, technology providers, engineering organizations, and fellow practitioners who are helping shape the future of data exchange standards in the process industry.

We are proud to join a community that includes leading organizations across the process, energy, chemical, and industrial technology sectors, including BASF, Evonik, AVEVA, Shell, Merck, Siemens, and many other companies contributing to DEXPI's mission. Together, these organizations are helping advance open standards for engineering data exchange, improve interoperability across digital ecosystems, and support the next generation of digital transformation initiatives in the process industry.

We look forward to:

  • Contributing our experience in simulation-based digital twins and process intelligence

  • Participating in technical discussions, working groups, and community initiatives

  • Supporting the advancement of open standards for engineering and operational data

  • Engaging with the broader DEXPI community through meetings and workshops

  • Exploring new opportunities to improve interoperability across digital twin ecosystems

As we continue to develop open and interoperable digital twin architectures for the process industry, we see strong alignment between DEXPI's mission and our vision for the future of industrial digitalization.

We are excited to join the DEXPI community and look forward to contributing to the development of standards that support greater interoperability, collaboration, and innovation across the process industry.
